Accutane and Digestive Issues

The prescription acne medication Accutane was on the market for many years, but in 2009, the manufacturer, Hoffman- LaRoche , pulled it from shelves.  The active ingredient, isotretinoin, is used in many medications, but most commonly for the treatment of cystic acne.  Sadly, this type of oral acne medication has been linked to dangerous side effects, most notably, painful digestive complications.  People that have been faced with Accutane related health problems may be looking for answers about the complications they are facing.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is an umbrella term for several health problems that affect the digestive system.  Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis both fall under this category and all three have been directly link to Accutane use.  Although each of the specific disorders that fall under the name inflammatory bowel disease has their own side effects, the following symptoms may be a sign that a person is suffering from one of these serious digestive complications:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Loss of energy
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Bloody stool

These and other physical ailments may be a sign that a person has developed a serious digestive problem as a result of Accutane use.  Each victim will need to be evaluated individually in order to decide which type of condition they have developed and whether or not this problem can be linked to Accutane use.  It is important for anyone that is experiencing digestive issues to seek the help of a medical professional as soon as possible.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is primarily identified by an inflammation in the digestive system.  This condition can cause serious problems for victims because it requires daily attention, and often dramatic diet and lifestyle changes, to avoid further complications.  Traditionally, the symptoms of Crohn’s disease include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain

At this point there are no known cures for Crohn’s disease, however there are treatment options available to help victims minimize symptoms and avoid unnecessary suffering.  Day to day life may be interrupted with medications and dietary restrictions, but the more extreme options include surgeries to remove part of the intestinal tract.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis, much like Crohn’s disease, is a swelling of the digestive tract, but this condition specifically affects the rectum and colon.  This incurable and chronic inflammation can cause the victim to experience several undesirable side effects such as:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain in the rectum
  • Bloody stool
  • Frequent diarrhea
  • Pain in the abdomen

To manage symptoms of ulcerative colitis patients will likely be advised to adhere to extreme dietary restrictions and begin taking prescription medication.  In some cases, surgery may be required.  This most frequently results in the removal of the colon which can lead to serious lifestyle changes and long-term medical care needs.

Because these conditions are incurable, many victims may require life-long treatment which can be costly.  The financial demands, emotional distress, and dietary restrictions may cause complications for victims, but many individuals can file an accutane lawsuit for financial support from the drug manufacturer.
